Coming up with the perfect design for a child’s room gives you a chance to exercise your creativity. Although you don’t have to stick to strict interior design rules for these rooms, there are certain elements you shouldn’t overlook.
When decorating children’s rooms, keep the following tips in mind:
- Choose a theme. There are a wide range of options for this, including princess, dinosaur, sea or jungle themes. Once you know your theme, you can choose decor items to go along with it. You don’t have to fill the room with these items. A few carefully chosen ones can go a long way toward reflecting the room’s theme without overdoing it.
- Include bright and soft lighting options. Choose a fun overhead light that gives children enough light for playing or working on assignments, such as a fixture shaped like a plane. Select a lamp or two that provide softer lighting for reading before bedtime and a nightlight for children who are afraid of the dark.
- Have enough storage. Storage is important for keeping children’s rooms looking neat and orderly. Toy boxes, under-bed storage drawers, window seats with drawers and bookcases all provide places to keep toys, books, art supplies and other items.
- Choose an area rug. Pick a rug that complements the room’s color scheme, and place it in the middle of the room or under the bed or crib. Look for an area rug that’s easy to clean.
